Addiction FAQ's

What is Drug Addiction?

Addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences to the individual that is addicted and to those around them. Drug addiction is a brain disease because the abuse of drugs leads to changes in the structure and function of the brain. Although it is true that for most people the initial decision to take drugs is voluntary, over time the changes in the brain caused by repeated drug abuse can affect a person's self control and ability to make sound decisions, and at the same time send intense impulses to take drugs.

Alcohol Detox

For most people, drinking alcoholic beverages is an occasional treat. For others, it is a weekend relaxation. For some it is a life choice. For those in the latter group, alcohol dependency takes over their life, and the only way to get clean is through alcohol detox.

The first things that come to mind when people think of alcohol detox are usually drugs. Both illegal and pharmaceutical drugs can cause long-term effects on the body that create a dependency. Rarely do people think of alcohol detox when they think of detox. Alcohol is both physically and psychologically addictive.

Many alcoholics find the psychological aspect of quitting to be the hardest. The mind is a powerful thing indeed, and it is hard to fight its influence. Beyond the social aspects of drinking, however, the mind is usually only working on abating the physical needs of alcohol dependency. The mind is a slave to the body in that respect.

Alcohol Programs

You are a unique individual. Even your addiction is unique. Every aspect of your alcohol treatment program must be handled in a way that is designed for your specific needs.

Alcohol takes control of every part of your daily life. Alcohol programs for you only work if they are created to address the needs of you and your family. An alcohol treatment center will do just that.

With well-trained and caring staff, they will develop alcohol programs for you that will carry you through the trying times of physical withdrawal, and the lasting effects of psychological addiction to drugs or alcohol.

Your family is one of a kind as well. Any alcohol program for you is also for your family. Dealing with the lingering affects of what happened during your addiction, and what will come after to help you stay clean and be happy can take a toll on even the most devout family.

Good friends who do not enable your addiction are invaluable to you too. Find a close network of friends who really want to see you healthy, and happy, and most of all-for who you really are, and stick with them. Seek their companionship when things seem tough.

Above all that: find a reliable treatment center and let them design an alcohol program for you that will do everything above, and more. Medically trained staff can ease the discomforts of physical withdrawal making it possible to live through it and keep going. Professional psychologists will show you how to deal with your feelings of dependency, and how to cope with the desires and cravings that may last forever.

There are great facilities available now that have benefited from years of research on the effects of alcoholism. They are ready to give you all the help you need to achieve success. You can have a fulfilling life full of happiness if you just ask for it.

Alcohol programs designed for you can be affordable, too. Many are even covered by insurance companies in an effort to help you recover from your illness. Find out if your insurance carrier covers rehabilitation costs. Many rehab centers will also help you finance the uncovered costs associated with recovery.

Drug Detox

There are many steps involved in a good drug detox program. None of them has to be scary when you have a good addiction therapy program at your side. Drug detox is not something that an addict can handle alone.

"I can go as long as I want without drugs." "I can stop anytime." "I can stop any time I want to." Have you made any of those statements, or ones like them? If you have a drug problem, chances are you have.

There are two sides to every addiction: the mental, and the physical. Both of those sides are equally powerful. Both take hold of the victim and create an atmosphere where it is nearly impossible to quit without drug detox.

The physical side is usually the side that creates the well-known withdrawal symptoms during drug detox. They are the ones that everyone hears about. The shaking, the seizures, the vomiting are all parts of drug detoxification. Alone it is hard to get through any one of these symptoms. Even worse is the fact that they often happen more than one at a time. Serious, well-qualified medical treatment is necessary to overcoming the obstacles of physical dependency.

The psychological or mental side of drug abuse is not as readily apparent, but just as real. Many times it will feel to the addict like he or she is cured once the physical withdrawals have been overcome. Too often the patient checks themselves out of drug detox feeling they are ready to go into the outside world without taking into consideration the many aspects of the psychological side of drug abuse.

Caring, well-trained psychologists like those available at a drug treatment center can help you through all of the mental issues you will face both during physical withdrawal, but also afterwards, and once on the outside. Many hidden traps are waiting to ensnare you into the prison of drug and alcohol abuse. You can fight them. You just need the help the professionals at your drug detox center can provide.

Don't fight them. Don't leave the program before the health care providers that have developed your plan have released you. The programs have been designed for you specifically, and only work if you take the responsibility of completing them fully.

Drug Rehab

For many people, after they have realized they have a problem, the next scary step is asking for help. They're not sure what to expect from drug rehab, and many unpleasant images can run through their minds.

To be sure getting clean is not an easy, simple, or fun thing to do. Once you have found the freedom from drugs, you will know it was worth every effort spent. Drug rehabilitation centers are not there to pass judgment on you. They're not going to treat you badly because you have the illness of addiction.

The staff is there because they care. They want to help you overcome the addictions that have taken away your life. First and foremost, the professionals that will be working to help you truly are your friends.

Drug rehab centers are not cold, drab buildings with padded, locked rooms. They are beautifully appointed facilities that offer wonderful rooms to the patients as well as bright, cheery community rooms as well.

The treatments themselves comprise many different aspects. Most drug rehab programs will include both physical help to overcome the addiction and psychological help as well. Both sides are very important. Medical help to alleviate the physical withdrawal symptoms of addiction is necessary to avoid serious side effects, but the psychological side of treatment can not be ignored either. It may be the most important aspect to an effective, long-term recovery.

When a patient checks into a drug rehabilitation facility, they are given an assessment test to determine how severe their addiction is and what steps will make their recovery go as smoothly as possible.

Every patient differs in how much help they need, so no two programs are exactly alike. It's best to find a facility that handles a limited number of patients at one time so you can be sure you will be getting the attention and supervision you need during this difficult time in your life.

Drug Treatment

People in need of drug treatment may come to an important decision. When he or she concludes that it is time for drug treatment, that person has taken the most important step towards recovery. The next important decision they need to make with respect to their drug treatment is where they will seek your treatment.

There are many facilities offering drug treatment. Some facilities are quite large and others are quite small. Some drug treatment facilities are as bleak as a prison, and other drug treatment facilities are as comfortable as a spa. The drug treatment facility you choose should be one that can provide you with the atmosphere and help that you need. You want to give yourself every opportunity to triumph, and you want the facility you choose to give you every chance to succeed. If the type of drug treatment facility you seek has a comfortable setting and an intimate culture, than you want to consider Choices Recovery Center in Fort Pierce, Florida. There are never more than 30 clients at this drug treatment and alcohol treatment center. The smaller size enables more focused care and attention and can help you feel more confident and comfortable.

In order for drug treatment to work well, you need to be in the right frame of mind. Your surroundings are an important component of your drug treatment. Your environment will directly affect your mindset. The almost spa-like setting of Choices Recovery Center will help you feel at ease and relaxed. From the pool to the tennis courts to the comfortable rooms, the facility works towards giving you the right peace of mind while you focus on your recovery. You want to make sure you select the facility that gives you every opportunity to beat your addiction.

Drug Detox2

Seeking out treatment for a drug problem can be a difficult thing for an individual to do. While many know they need help or assistance with their problem, it can be hard to separate themselves from the substance they have used and abused for so many years. This is why many individuals find the hardest part of treatment to be drug detox.

Drug detox is the first thing individuals go through when they enter a drug treatment facility. When an individual is using drugs, the drugs are actually in control of the individual's body. Many people with drug problems don't recognize this though as they assume they can stop if they want to. Drug detox helps individuals regain control of their body and their life.

Many individuals fear drug detox due to the fact it can be very difficult. The absence of drugs that have been consumed for several years can create painful and sickening feelings within an individual. Throwing up, excessive sweating, headaches, pain, insomnia and more are just some of the things an individual can experience when going through drug detox.

While drug detox can be a horrific experience, it only lasts for a few days or at most a week. Within a few days of entering drug detox, the pain, nausea and other problems will start to subside. Each day with drug detox will get better until the individual is completely weaned off of drugs. Individuals can then move from drug detox to understanding why they had an addiction and what their triggers are.

Dual Diagnosis

Dual diagnosis occurs when someone has both a mental disorder and an alcohol or drug problem. These conditions occur together frequently. In particular, alcohol and drug problems tend to occur with:

    Depression
    Anxiety disorders
    Schizophrenia
    Personality disorders

Sometimes the mental problem occurs first. This can lead people to use alcohol or drugs that make them feel better temporarily. Sometimes the substance abuse occurs first. Over time, that can lead to emotional and mental problems.

To get better, someone with a dual diagnosis must treat both conditions. First, the person must go for a period of time without using alcohol or drugs. This is called detoxification. The next step is rehabilitation for the substance problem and treatment for the mental disorder. This step might include medicines, support groups and talk therapy.

Alcohol Addiction, Alcohol Dependence, or Alcoholism: A chronic disease characterized by a strong craving for alcohol, a constant or periodic reliance on use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, the inability to limit drinking, physical illness when drinking is stopped, and the need for increasing amounts of alcohol to feel its effects.

Payment

Choices Recovery Center accepts many forms of payment: health insurance, private payment, and most major credit cards.

Choices Recovery Center accepts most health insurance policies. Understanding the actual benefits and determining their financial impact on you can be quite confusing. Allow your intake counselor to assist you in that process.

If for some reason your health care benefits will not cover your stay with us, you will find Choices Recovery Center to be one of the most affordable private specialty centers in the United States. Actual treatment costs vary, as do the severity of each person's illness and the length of stay required.
